More heart stuff

April 13, 2007

Here is an emotionally hard-to-read blog by the family of a woman with PPCM:

Ty’s story

I am a lucky survivor of PPCM.  I hope the same for this new mom.

Heart news

Heart valve grown from stem cells.

Heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub, who led the team, said doctors could be using artificially grown heart components in transplants within three years.

His researchers at Harefield hospital managed to grow tissue that works in the same way as human heart valves.

Sir Magdi told the Guardian newspaper a whole heart could be produced from stem cells within 10 years.

This is so exciting!

Red Dress Collection 2007

January 29, 2007

It’s that time again:  National Wear Red Day is this Friday, February 2nd.  I’m excited to head to NYC to see the Red Dress collection on the runway in person again, and this time I won’t forget my camera!  Last year the models were women from the music world, this year, they are saying that the models are “celebrated women” from many areas.  I believe that the video I’m in will open the show again.

Dig out something red to wear, and make sure it’s ready for Friday.

Six Years!

November 13, 2006

Today is the sixth anniversary of my diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy.  And they said I wouldn’t survive the night.  When I did, they said I wouldn’t survive longer than 5 years without a heart transplant.  Here I am, with my original parts, as healthy as can be.

See Mom?  That don’t try and tell me what to do or I’ll do the opposite attitude that I perfected as a teen has served me well as an adult.

Supermodels

June 18, 2006

Lily and I are in July's issue of Prevention Magazine. Last year when we were in The New Yorker, we were informed and sent several copies. This time we found out by accident, my mom's co-worker spotted us in her subscription copy.

If you don't feel like purchasing Prevention, flip through it in the grocery line, or go to WomenHeart and you can see us in poster version in the online store.

The photo was shot almost 2 years ago, I am amazed at how grown up she looks now.

Fergie Red Dress Collection

The show was such fun!  Pictured above are Fergie (BlackEyed Peas), Eartha Kitt, and Thalia.  Security was tight, celebrities were everywhere, and I was on a videotaped introduction to the show!

Here is a partial list of models:  Natasha Beddingield, Kelly Rowland, Jojo, Sheryl Crow, Eartha Kitt, Cristina Melian, Amerie, Michelle Philips, Thalia, LeAnn Rimes, Fergie, Lindsay Lohan, Deborah Harry, Elaine Stritch.

Click here to see all the dresses and models.  Looks like they’ll be putting up a video soon as well.

Mary wore her Red Dress…

January 28, 2006

I’m attending the opening of the Red Dress Collection next week, and just check out some of the models:

More than 20 prestigious designers are creating red dresses, which will be modeled by musical luminaries including Amerie, Bebe Neuwirth, CeCe Winans, Christina Milian, Debbie Harry, Eartha Kitt, Jossie Perez, LeAnn Rimes, Lee Ann Womack, Michelle Phillips, Nelly Furtado, Sheryl Crow, Shirley Manson, and Thalía. During Fashion Week, The Heart Truth booth will offer free heart disease risk factor screening and special promotions from the Red Dress Collection 2006 sponsors.

Yes, Shirley Manson.  I could not possibly be any more excited to maybe meet her.  Be so close to her.  And to think that these are just the big names on stage….many more will be in the audience.  They will see my face to open the show….yikes!

 Go Red!

Friday, February 3rd is the day to wear red for women’s heart health and the fight against the #1 killer of women:  heart disease.  Any bit of red will do:  socks, tie, top, purse, shoes, scarf, whatever you’ve got.  Check these resources to get yourself a Red Dress Pin, and to find a list of Red Dress activities in your area:

Red Dress Collection 2006

January 20, 2006

We spent the day in NYC to shoot a video for the opening of the Red Dress Collection runway show on Feburary 3.  I was a bit nervous, but the production agency was lovely and made us feel right at home. I had a manicure with seriously red polish, and 2 hours on hair and make-up.  Sometimes several people were fussing with me at once.   I was interviewed for about 45 minutes, although it didn’t seem as long.  Kevin Krier, the owner/director of the group creating the show did the interviewing.  He was delightful. He’s been to Africa.  I wanted to have the rest of the afternoon just to chat with him.  Here is another photo on the set, taken by an extraordinarly handsome camera man.  I’m hoping I come off better on video than in these photos.

Then it was Lily’s turn.  She was charming, as usual.  I felt a bit like a stage mom, standing on the sidelines making sure she didn’t say or do anything ridiculous.

The show is Feburary 3rd, and I will attend if I’m not in Ethiopia.  This year the theme is music, and many musicians will be modeling.  They wouldn’t tell me who, but don’t think I didn’t try to get it out of them.  I mentioned Tori when asked about my favorite female rockers.  Maybe she’ll be there.

Wouldn’t it be a riot if my bum heart was the reason I got to meet Tori?

Red Dress Project 2006

January 11, 2006

February is coming quickly, and so is Wear Red Day. In New York City, designers and celebrities are getting ready to unveil the Red Dress Collection for 2006. Last year, an impressive list of famous women modeled the collection on the runway during Fashion Week. Guess who will be sharing the runway with them this year? Well, on a screen at the end of the runway to open the show? Yes, the resident Red Dress Blogger: Gaiagal herself. I’m headed into the city to interview for a video that will open the show. And I get an invitation to the show! The audience is packed with even more fancy people than the stage. What to wear? So far, no designers have lined up to create a dress for me. Jean-Paul Gaultier, where are you?
